Sound Familiar?

Every Parent Sees It. Most Do Not Know What to Change.

The screens, the attitude, the quitting when things get hard. It is not a character flaw. It is a missing environment.

  1. Child struggling with homework, showing signs of frustration and giving up
    01 External Problem

They quit the moment it gets hard.

“My kid gives up the moment something gets difficult and I cannot get them to push through anything.”

  2. Parent looking worried about their child, feeling helpless
    02 Internal Problem

You feel like you are running out of answers.

“I feel like I am failing them by not finding something that actually builds who they are becoming.”

  3. Young student in martial arts uniform showing confidence and discipline
    03 Philosophical Problem

Every kid deserves a place that expects more.

“Every child deserves a place where effort is expected, growth is real, and confidence is earned not handed out.”

Four Paths. One Standard.

Not Sure Where to Start?

Answer one question and we will point you to the right program.

Who are you signing up?

No Jargon. No Hype.

What Training With Us Actually Looks Like.

Structured Classes

Every class follows a deliberate structure: warm-up, technique instruction, drilling, and controlled application. Students know what to expect each session, and that consistency is part of what makes training effective. There is no chaos in our gym and no wasted time. Instructors keep class moving, on task, and purposeful from the moment students step on the mat.

Qualified Instructors

Every instructor who teaches here holds a recognized rank and has completed our internal coaching certification. We do not hand a room of kids to an assistant with three months of experience and a clipboard. Our lead instructors have each trained for over a decade and have taught hundreds of students across every age group and skill level.

Real Progression

Belt promotions here are earned, not scheduled. Students advance when they demonstrate the technique, attitude, and consistency the next rank requires. No hazing, no unsafe contact, no practices that prioritize toughness theater over actual development. Parents see measurable change because we track it and communicate it. What your student earns here is real.

Trained Where It Matters

Michael Madeley

5th Degree Black Belt under Carlos Machado

Black belt since 2009 · Led teams to multiple DFW competition wins

Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu

Professor Madeley opened Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu - The Colony because he believed The Colony deserved a school that took both the art and the student seriously. Every instructor hired here is held to the same standard he sets on the mat every day: show up prepared, teach with intention, and treat every student as capable of more than they currently believe about themselves.

What Parents Always Ask

Everything You Want to Know Before You Come In.

How old does my child need to be to start?

Children as young as 4 can start in our Children's Program. Younger students focus on coordination, listening, and body awareness through structured drilling and movement games. As students grow, the curriculum opens up into live training and competition for those who pursue it. Kids that age are not learning to fight. They are learning to follow instructions, take turns, and be part of a group.

What is included in the free trial?

The free trial is a real introductory class in the program of your choice. You pick a class time, show up, and experience a full session. That includes warm-up, technique instruction, drilling, and a debrief with the instructor at the end. There is no payment required to book, no contract, and no pressure to continue. The point of the trial is to see exactly what training here looks like before you make any decision.

How long are classes?

Most classes run 45–60 minutes depending on the program and age group. Kids classes are the right length to keep that age group engaged without losing them. Teen and adult classes run 60 minutes and include warm-up, technique, drilling, and supervised live training.

Do I need any gear to get started?

No gear is needed for the trial class. Comfortable athletic clothing and a water bottle are all you need on the mat. If you decide to continue, we give you a specific list of what to buy and where to get it at fair prices.

What style of martial arts do you teach?

Our primary discipline is Carlos Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, taught directly by Professor Madeley, a 5th Degree Black Belt under Carlos Machado. The Children's Program blends BJJ, Wrestling, Kickboxing, and Judo. We also run dedicated Wrestling, Adult Conditioning, Total Body Fitness and Nutrition (with Coach Tony), Summer Camp, and After School Care (at thecolonysbestafterschool.com).

How do you keep classes safe?

Safety is built into the structure of every class. New students drill technique without resistance before any contact is introduced. Instructors stop drills the moment mechanics create injury risk and correct the technique before continuing. Live training is permitted only when a student has the control and awareness to do it responsibly.

What if my child has never done martial arts before?

Most of our students start with zero experience. That is who our programs are designed for. Instructors meet each student at their current level and progress them at a pace that challenges without overwhelming. No assumed baseline.

What makes Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu - The Colony different?

Our head instructor is a 5th Degree Black Belt directly under Carlos Machado, one of the most credible BJJ lineages in the world. The Children's Program is led by Professor Thompson, a 1st Degree Black Belt with 39 years on the mat across multiple disciplines, including two IKF world-class titles. Class sizes are kept small enough that every student is known by name and tracked through a clear advancement system.

The Cost of Waiting

What Stays the Same If Nothing Changes?

This is not about fear. It is about being honest about what the next few years look like on the current path.

  • Confidence gaps that form at 8 rarely close on their own by 16. The window is shorter than it feels.

  • Kids without structure find it somewhere else. You want to be the one who chose where.

  • The habits that define how your child handles hard things are being set right now, whether you act or not.
