Holiday Closures

We close for major holidays.

The academy closes on major federal holidays. Reduced schedules apply during holiday weeks. We post all holiday schedule changes to our Facebook and Instagram pages. Call (214) 494-6111 if you are unsure whether we are open on a specific day.

Drop-In Policy

Active members can drop into any eligible class.

Current members may attend any class within their enrolled program without advance registration, subject to capacity. Prospective students on the trial period may attend any class that matches their program and age band. Visitors are welcome to watch any class from the observation area.

Makeup Class Policy

Missed classes can be made up within the same week.

If a student misses a scheduled class, they may attend any equivalent class offered that same week as a makeup at no additional charge. Makeup classes do not roll over to the following week. For longer absences, contact the front desk to discuss a hold or credit.

Before You Come In

What to Know for Your First Class.

First-time nerves are normal and expected. This list covers everything so your first visit is straightforward from the moment you walk in.

  1. 01

    Arrive 10 minutes early

Early arrival lets us sign you in, show you around, and introduce you to the instructor before class starts. Rushing in at the last minute means missing context that makes the first class easier to follow.

  2. 02

    Wear athletic clothing

Shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt work for the first class. Your trial uniform is waiting for you when you arrive. No need to buy or prepare anything before your first visit.

  3. 03

    Bring a water bottle

Classes run 45 to 60 minutes. Staying hydrated throughout is important, especially in your first few sessions before your conditioning improves.

  4. 04

Leave the gear shopping for later

No special equipment is needed for the trial class. When you decide to enroll, we will give you a specific list and tell you where to get it without overpaying.

  5. 05

Parents: the viewing area is ready for you

Dedicated seating is available in the parent observation area. Watching the class in full is encouraged for first visits. We want you to see exactly what your child is experiencing from the first day.

  6. 06

    No experience is needed

Every student starts somewhere. Instructors will meet you at your current level and give you corrections and encouragement throughout. Showing up is the only prerequisite for the first class.

  7. 07

Remove shoes at the mat edge

All training happens barefoot on the mat. Shoes are removed at the edge before stepping on. This is a standard protocol and will be pointed out when you arrive if you miss the signage.

  8. 08

    Ask questions after class

After the class ends, the instructor will check in with new students. That is the right time to ask about the curriculum, pacing, and what to expect in the weeks ahead. No question is too basic.

Inside A Class

What a Typical Class Looks Like.

  1. 1

    Line Up and Bow In

Students line up in order of rank at the start of every class and bow to open the session. This is a two-second routine that signals the transition from outside life to focused training. Students who are chronically late miss this, which is why arriving early matters.

  2. 2

    Warm-Up

Every class opens with a structured warm-up that includes movement drills, mobility work, and light cardiovascular activity appropriate for the age group and program. For kids, this often includes movement games. For adult programs, it is more technique-focused. The warm-up runs 8 to 12 minutes.

  3. 3

    Technique Instruction

The instructor introduces one to three related techniques for the day. Each technique is demonstrated in full, broken down step by step, and demonstrated again before students attempt it. For new students, this is the slowest and most detailed part of the class. Instructors welcome questions here.

  4. 4

    Drilling with a Partner

Students pair up and drill the technique repeatedly with a partner. Repetitions build muscle memory. The instructor circulates and provides individual corrections. New students are paired intentionally with experienced partners who can guide them through the movement with patience.

  5. 5

    Controlled Application

Advanced and intermediate students apply their technique in a controlled live setting, whether that is light sparring, positional rolling, or situational drilling. New students observe or participate at a reduced resistance level under close instructor supervision. This section only applies when the student is ready.

  6. 6

    Cool-Down and Debrief

The final five minutes of every class are spent cooling down, stretching, and debriefing. The instructor highlights what the class worked on, acknowledges students who demonstrated the day's technique well, and previews what is coming next. This is where the lesson sticks.

  7. 7

    Bow Out

Students bow out in the same formation they opened in. For new students, the instructor will check in briefly after class to answer questions and give early feedback. Parents of younger students are invited to speak with the instructor at this point as well.

Common Questions About Classes and Events.

How do I see current class times?

The current weekly schedule is being finalized. For the most accurate times, call (214) 494-6111 or message us via Facebook or Instagram.

How often should I come per week?

Two to three sessions per week is the standard recommendation for meaningful progress. One class per week keeps you in the routine but slows advancement. Three sessions are ideal for students who are serious about belt progression or competition prep.

Can I drop in or do I need to register?

Active members can drop into any eligible class. First-time visitors should book a trial slot in advance so we can have you in the right class at the right time. Walk-ins are welcome to observe any class without registration.

What if I miss a class?

Missed classes can be made up by attending any equivalent class offered that same week. Makeup classes do not roll over to the following week. For longer absences due to illness, injury, or travel, contact the front desk to discuss a hold.

How do you handle holidays?

Hours may vary on major holidays. Follow our Facebook and Instagram pages for real-time updates, or call (214) 494-6111 before visiting on a holiday weekend.

When are belt testings?

Belt advancement at Carlos Machado Jiu Jitsu is instructor-nominated, not calendar-based. Students test when Professor Madeley determines they have the technical competency for the next rank.

How do I sign up for events?

When events are scheduled they will be listed on this page. To reserve a spot, call (214) 494-6111 or sign up at the front desk.

Can I watch a class before signing up?

Yes, and we encourage it. Walk in during any business hour, tell the person at the front desk you would like to observe a class, and they will show you to the viewing area. No appointment needed.
